About

The Heart of Wales Geopark is run by a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), as a registered charity operated for the benefit of the local community and visitors alike. Its purpose is to increase public understanding of our geological heritage and its relationship to nature and human culture, to instil an appreciation for the importance of this area for understanding our place in the history of the world, and to help preserve its unique character while encouraging research and understanding of all its aspects.

The Heart of Wales Geopark CIO has a range of trustees from diverse backgrounds, including palaeontologists, a local county councillor, a graphic designer, an IT and database specialist, representatives of the local tourism and business sectors, and editors. We also work closely with town and community councils, the hospitality sector, local arts societies, local and national museums, and landowners, in order to make sure that as many interests as possible are represented as the project develops. We are a relatively small group of volunteers, and will be principally dependent on grant funding to develop the project fully, so expect it to build gradually over the coming years!

What we aim to achieve is a combination of physical structures such as information boards and displays, combined with a rich, multimedia information source that provides a platform for understanding the geological, natural and cultural history. We also aim to coordinate active learning opportunities in the area, such as guided walks and workshops, and promote awareness of scientific discoveries, while facilitating and enhancing scientific research.
