Shaky Bridge / Cefnllys Castle guided walk

Location
Shaky Bridge (SO 0847 6119)
Date
2025-05-05
Time
14:00 - 17:00
Availability
Places Limited. Booking Essential.

Join us for a guided walk in the Shaky Bridge area to look at the geology (with Joe Botting/Lucy Muir) and archaeology (with Julian Ravest). The walk will start at the little parking area at Shaky Bridge (Grid ref: SO0847 6119, what3words: mergers.rotation.summit). We will walk from the parking area up to Cefnllys Castle, taking in St Michael’s Church, the sequence of volcanic and sedimentary rocks up the hill, and the castle itself. There is no charge for this event, but a donation on the day to help cover Geopark costs would be greatly appreciated.

The walk will be relatively short (ca. 3 km in total), but the way up to the castle will be consistently uphill, with one very steep section. We will take the same route back, so there will be a steep downhill section on the way back to the car park. We will largely be walking on good tracks, but with some rougher sections, so good footwear (i.e., walking boots) will be essential. The hilltop is very exposed to wind and rain: please bring an extra (ideally waterproof/windproof) layer. If the weather is bad, the walk is likely to be shortened (or cancelled).

The number of places on the walk is limited, so booking is essential. Please let us know by email if you would like to come! If you plan on attending, then please provide a phone number so that we can let you know if the event has to be cancelled at short notice.
